Penile torsion is another type of congenital malfunction that results in a rotational defect of the penile shaft. Penile torsion occurs because of abnormal development that causes disorientation of the penile shaft and corporeal rotation around its axis. Sometimes, abnormal skin attachment also leads to this congenital malfunction, and is most likely seen in an uncircumcised penis. In the severe cases of Penile torsion, the penis is almost rotated to the left.
If the rotation is less than 90 degrees then the patient does not require any treatment, however sometimes in order to remove the mild torsion, parents do consider proper treatment for their boys. Doctors opt for “degloving” as the most preferred treatment for Penile torsion. The surgery requires subsequent repositioning of the penile skin to minimize the torsed appearance.
